Most gun owners know some of the basics when it comes to gun care, like getting a gun cleaning kit, but firearm maintenance potentially has many moving parts of options in cleaning and lubricating firearms. That goes for pistol, rifle and shotgun users.
It is well established that a gun cleaning rod is made for accessory attachments, beginning with the patch holder and, of course, the cotton patches. After that you have the bronze brush or alternatively a nylon brush version, a cotton mop and a brass jag which also needs patches to go with it for effectively drawing out both carbon fouling and excess gun lube.

Bore solvent is a liquid that needs to be applied to gunmetal and then removed so there is a definite need for these accessories. The same goes for applying and removing excess gun oil, CLP and/or grease.
You may also turn to what is called a mil-spec brush, which is a double ended nylon detail brush for scrubbing powder residue off of small parts. Beyond that, there is a multi-use all-purpose gun cleaning brush which is made of either nylon or bronze for harder buildup, and even a steel version which you should be careful with to avoid doing damage unless it can't be avoided. The rule of thumb is a softer metal like bronze should not harm the kind of stainless steel that gunmetal is made of. So, if you use a steel brush, you can create microgrooves that can not only disturb rifling but also leave fine lines on metal surfaces that carbon fouling can cling to, making it harder to remove, even with bore solvent or lube oil.
Then, there is a very popular specialty applicator called the tapered-tipped cotton swab that Tetra Gun came up with. It is perfect for getting into semiauto handgun rail grooves to clean out debris and efficiently apply gun grease, but that is just one usage. The company also makes a jumbo swab that happens to be sized to perfectly fit a 9mm gun bore but it can be used to be saturated with gun solvent or gun oil and then applied to hard-to-reach spots on all kinds of firearms.
Another category made specially for shotgun cleaning is a bore mop rod, which is a full-length cotton mop with a handle that is used to do a quick and easy swabbing out of a shotgun barrel. It can really come in handy if you are in a rush out in the field or at an outdoor shooting range.
The universal bore guide is a tool used to safely guide a traditional firearm cleaning rod down the bore of a long gun as to prevent the unnecessary scratching contact inside the bore itself. As it turns out, most scratches seem to occur at the point of entry, or breech, where it is often a sharp edge. This isn't usually an issue at the muzzle end.
Bore cleaning rope is another long-standing tradition for some gun cleaning buffs since it is the quickest and easiest way to clean out a barrel before or after action, though it does delivery the thorough results of a rod.
After that, you can use a final wipe down product like a container of Tetra Gun Lubricating CLP Wipes or the individual Silicone Gun Cloth or Lead Removal Wipe. These and products like them have all been on the market for decades.
Lastly, especially when it comes to rifle and shotgun cleaning, you usually need a stabilizing platform like a gun vise firearm maintenance station which is available in different designs.
Well, that's it except for properly matching up your gun cleaning accessories with the correct caliber attachment.
