I wanted to set the record straight on what PTFE gun lubes are all about. Even the most definitive explanation may not dissuade the world's strongest blogsters. So be it.
Understanding PTFE Gun Lubes
PTFE, most commonly known as Teflon, is a DuPont brand. However, it's no longer exclusive to them. Other PTFE manufacturers have emerged worldwide. To the best of my knowledge, if the company that was once DuPont is still making it, it is no longer produced in the USA.
Let's avoid discussions about frying pans and toxic fumes. It's essential to focus on what happens during the manufacturing process of the particle. This is often confused with its behavior in a firearm environment. They are different. In fact, the Tetra formula buffers the material to prevent adverse effects.
The Temperature Factor
Here's another important point: firearms operate at flash temperatures, not sustained ones. This distinction is crucial.
Now, let’s dive into PTFE in gun lubricants. Tetra Gun uses a PTFE particle that is engineered and treated differently than the material from legacy manufacturers. This difference significantly impacts performance. Plus, Tetra adds a heavy dose of fluoropolymer magic to enhance the lubricant.
The Truth About Teflon Claims
Did you know that in the past, a brand of gun oil could claim to use Teflon if they included as little as 3%? In some clear bottles, the particles would settle, making little difference unless shaken. You could see how little there was—just a dusting. Due to specific gravity, Tetra also settles, and we recommend shaking it. However, our heavy dose ensures that our specially milled spherical particles are much more prevalent. This is what makes bore conditioning so authentic.
If you've used Tetra Gun Lubricant, you may have noticed its thicker consistency compared to other gun oils. This was intentional; it allows for better suspension of the particles.
Differentiating Quality Gun Lubes
Don’t lump all gun lubricants together. While there are a few other quality fluoropolymer lubes available, many are more about marketing than substance.
The special spherical particle in the 4-micron range fits nicely into the pores of a gun bore. This maximizes the benefits of the technology. For nearly four decades, Tetra has proven that this friction-fighting barrier material minimizes fouling buildup. It flexes under the pressure of metal parts sliding against one another. This is something a hard particle can't do safely, making Tetra superior to many lubes that contain no particles at all. If you know, you know.
Customer Satisfaction Over the Years
Forty years of Tetra Gun's customer satisfaction is proof enough that there's something to it.
So, if you're looking for a high-quality, American-made gun care solution, Tetra Gun is your go-to choice. Our products ensure your firearms are always in peak condition.
