Teflon based Gun Lube Fact or Fiction education: Myth vs. Reality

I wanted to set the record straight on what PTFE gun lubes are all about, though even the most definitive explanation will still not dissuade the world's strongest blogsters. So be it.

PTFE, most commonly and historically referred to as Teflon, a duPont brand, is no longer an exclusive thing. There are now other PTFE makers worldwide and if the company that was once duPont is still making it, it is no longer made in the USA to the best of my knowledge. Let's not get into any discussion about frying pans and toxic fumes, please. To explain that it's about what occurs in the actual manufacturing process of the particle. That is often confused with what happens to PTFE in use in a firearm environment. Different. In fact, the Tetra formula buffers the material to prevent the effect.

And here's another debunking fact - firearms use is flash temperature, not sustained. Big difference.

Now that's get to PTFE in gun lubricants. Tetra Gun uses a PTFE particle that is engineered and treated in such a way that makes it nothing like the material from the legacy manufacturer. It is this difference that makes the performance so much different. That, and that Tetra hits the lube with a heavy dose of fluoropolymer magic.

Important factoid. Did you know that back in the day, a brand of gun oil could make a claim and call the lubricant Teflon if they use as little as 3%. And, if you could see in the clear bottles some companies used, the particles would settle to the bottle and would make no difference unless it was shaken. And you could see how little there was, no more than a dusting. Due to specific gravity, Tetra also settles, and we recommend shaking, but the heavy dose makes our specially milled spherical particles much more prevalent. That's what makes the bore conditional that much more authentic. Also, if you have used Tetra Gun Lubricant, you will notice it's a thicker consistency than gun oils out there, so that it suspends better. That was intentional.

So, don't put the entire category together in the same bucket. There are a couple of other good quality gun fluoropolymer lubes out there, but the others are more marketing than substance, literally.

It is that special spherical particle in the 4-micron range that fits nicely into the pores of a gun bore that maximizes the benefit of the technology. For nearly four decades, Tetra has proven the point that this friction fighting barrier material minimizes fouling buildup by flexing under the pressure of two metal parts banging and sliding up against one another. This is something a hard particle can't do safely, and certainly superior to the many lubes that carry no particle at all. If you know, you know.
